Top 3 Moments of AAA TripleMania XXXIII
On Saturday, August 16th, AAA returned to Mexico City, MX for its big event, “TripleMania XXXIII.” The event was headlined by El Hijo del Vikingo putting his AAA Mega Championship on the line against Dominik Mysterio, El Grande Americano, and Dragon Lee. This event was largely cross-promoted with the WWE. It featured the largest and most significant WWE participation in AAA’s long history. There was a total of six WWE stars competing in championship matches at the event. However, there were even more WWE stars in non-title matches, too.
We also saw the prestigious Copa Bardahl match. Also, Los Garza put their AAA World Tag Team Championships on the line in a Street Fight against Pagano & Psycho Clown. Hijo de Wagner Jr. challenged El Mesias for the AAA Latin American Championship. We even saw The Judgement Day and AJ Styles make their presence known. On a night filled with a bunch of action for one of AAA’s biggest shows of the year, what were the top three moments of the event?
3. Demonito vs. Yesca
In one of the night’s big matches, we saw The Judgement Day face off with Mr. Iguana, Lola Vice, and Nino Hamburguesa. The Judgement Day consisted of Finn Balor, JD McDonagh, and Raquel Rodriguez. However, Roxanne Perez was there with them for moral support outside of the ring. This was a very fun six-person tag team match. However, one of the biggest moments of the night involved Balor and Mr. Iguana using very unconventional methods against each other to attempt to gain the upper hand.
Vice has become a crowd favorite in the AAA very quickly. So, pairing her with Iguana and Hamburguesa was a no-brainer. The top moment of the match, and one of the top moments of the night, saw Mr. Iguana’s stuffed iguana, Yesca, and Finn Balor’s new stuffed animal, Demonito, square off. Demonito was able to defeat Yesca and send Iguana packing to the outside. However, Hamburguesa got in the face of Balor, giving him a burger. This led to an enziguri from Mr. Iguana on Balor to regain control of Yesca.
Ultimately, The Judgement Day was victorious. Raquel put Lola away with her finishing move to win the match for her team. I don’t think anyone thought that Judgement Day was going to take a loss here, so this wasn’t a surprise. However, they still looked great in this one. As for their opponents, Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana continue to work well together. They complement each other very well, and are two of the most over people on just about any show. This is a match made in heaven that I wouldn’t mind seeing translate over to WWE television. Plus, I’m glad to see Vice on screen wherever she may be. She deserves an NXT Women’s Championship run sooner rather than later.
2. Omos Meets His Match in AAA’s Micro Man
In the opening match of the night, we saw the prestigious Copa Bardahl gauntlet match. This match featured 14 competitors with a shot to etch their name in the AAA history books. They also win a beautiful trophy. This is a match that takes place year in and year out at the AAA’s biggest event of the year, “TripleMania.” This year, we saw the likes of La Parka, as well as WWE stars like Otis, Joaquin Wilde, Cruz Del Toro, and the 7-foot-4 colossus, Omos. One of the night’s biggest and maybe even funniest came in the Copa Bardahl gauntlet match. Micro Man made his way to the ring with the No. 12th spot. However, what fans didn’t see coming was who came in right after him, Omos. The moment that came after was a sight to behold.
Micro Man was a clear fan favorite in Mexico City. He came into the match on fire. Despite his size, he could hang with the best of them. When Omos made his way out to the ring at No. 13, the whole feel of the match changed. Everyone tried to work together to take out the much bigger Omos. It didn’t work, and that led to the only competitors left standing being Omos and Micro Man. The face-off they had in the ring, while it was short-lived, caused a very big pop. Omos quickly took down Micro Man with a big boot. Omos eliminated five people, including Micro Man. He last eliminated La Parker, who entered at No. 1, to win the match.
With his win, Omos joins the likes of Octagon Jr., Laredo Kid, La Hiedra, Taurus, Mr. Iguana, and so many other Lucha Libre greats. While it’s been quite some time since the WWE Universe saw Omos on WWE TV, this was an excellent showing by the 7-foot-4 giant. Hopefully, this win will lead to a more prominent push for Omos on WWE TV. It’s been quite some time, and it appears that Omos has gotten much better in the ring. If Omos does return soon, it could be an interesting booking idea to throw him with Seth Rollins’ new group, The Vision. It remains to be seen if that happens. However, one thing we know for sure is that Omos looks better than ever before.
1. AJ Styles Screws Dominik Mysterio
The main event of AAA TripleMania XXXIII saw El Hijo del Vikingo put his AAA Mega Championship on the line against WWE’s El Grande Americano, Dragon Lee, and Dominik Mysterio. This was a very highly anticipated match heading into the night. The fans were firmly behind El Grande Americano and even Dominik Mysterio. The AAA faithful rained down boo’s on their current champion when he made his entrance, which was a sight to see. For a long time, Vikingo was very loved in the AAA. Now it seems like the fans just want nothing to do with him anymore.
This was an excellent four-way match, which saw all four competitors truly throw everything they had and more at each other. In what was perhaps the biggest moment of the entire event, we saw AJ Styles return to AAA for the first time in nearly 20 years to screw over Dominik Mysterio. Mysterio used a loaded mask to take everyone out. He then landed a frog splash on Dragon Lee and seemingly had the match won. Styles pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count and landed a Styles Clash on Dominik. This led to Vikingo hitting his 630 on Mysterio and pinning him to retain the AAA Mega Championship.
This was an amazing main event. It seems like AJ Styles and Dominik Mysterio’s rivalry is far from over. While Styles may have lost to Mysterio a mere two weeks ago at Summerslam, it doesn’t appear he’s ready to take that loss lying down. Styles is gunning for Mysterio and is gunning to become the new Intercontinental Champion, a feat he couldn’t accomplish at Summerslam. It should be interesting to see when these two men may square off again. However, one thing we seemingly know for sure is that they will meet again if Styles has anything to say about it.
This was a very fun AAA “TripleMania” event. Now, with the added heavy participation of WWE, we can see more dream matches. While this show lacked the true heavy hitters on the WWE roster, who’s to say that we won’t see Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, or others at the 34th or 35th TripleMania event? While a lot was up in the air, the future of AAA under the WWE banner looks very bright. It’s an exciting time to be a fan of professional wrestling, and more specifically, Lucha Libre.
