Katie Taylor Vs. Amanda Serrano Was More Than Just A Trilogy
Every so often, in boxing, there are two opponents made for each other—fighters you want to see fight to eternity. We were again treated to that tonight.
In front of a sold-out crowd in Madison Square Garden, we witnessed greatness—something rare in the sport of boxing. Two of the greatest fighters of all time were doing battle for a third time.
Three extremely close fights, all three with the same outcome. Katie Taylor was again victorious in retaining her Junior Welterweight Championship by a majority decision over Amanda Serrano. The judges scored the contest 95-95, 97-93, and 97-93.
This fight was far different from the slugfest of the first two. It was a tactical fight, one that, in the end, saw the more natural boxer prevail. In a fight, Serrano needed to be more aggressive; she was more strategic. This fight played right into Taylor’s hands.
I believed the previous two fights were close. You could have had the series tied at one apiece going into this fight. However, tonight’s match may have been the easiest to decide. Even with that said, it was a close fight.
But tonight was not just about these two warriors. It was about what they mean to women’s boxing and how they created opportunities for other female fighters. The card showcased all female boxers for the first time in history!
This is largely due to these two athletes, MVP Promotions, and Matchbook. Whether you love him or hate him, Jake Paul is a tremendous businessman who has done much to catapult women’s boxing into the future.
Yes, there have been great female fighters before—Laila Ali and Christy Martin come to mind right away. But for the first time, women’s boxing is mainstream, and that is thanks in large part to Jake Paul and Eddie Hearn.
Both women showed incredible class in the post-fight interviews in the ring, acknowledging the fans and each other. Neither commented on what their future holds, but they did confirm that this will be the end of their rivalry.
Regardless of what the future holds for these two great fighters, this trilogy is a moment that will stand the test of time. Two superior boxers gave it their all for the fans and the love of this sport.
Tonight was more than two incredible fighters and their trilogy. Tonight was about women’s boxing and how it is here to stay!
