On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Kayla Harrison defeated champion Julianna Pena in dominating fashion to become the new UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion! Harrison didn’t take long to call Amanda Nunes, who was in the crowd, to the octagon.

The two had a face-off, which got the crowd in New Jersey and the MMA community buzzing. The former UFC Women’s Featherweight and Bantamweight Champion was very vocal about coming out of retirement to face the Women’s Title Match winner before Saturday.

With one of the biggest PPVs in UFC history on the horizon, what is the likelihood these two legendary combat sports warriors will face off, and when? UFC’s CEO Dana White gave insight into these questions in a post-press conference after UFC 316.

White states he wants to make that matchup, but he’s unsure if it will happen in 2025 due to the UFC’s drug testing policy. Any returning fighter must undergo six months of random drug tests before being allowed to compete back inside the Octagon.

The UFC can provide an exemption, but they are rarely given and will most likely not happen here, given the magnitude of this fight. Even if “The Lioness” is exempted, she must pass two drug tests.

So, as anticipation grows, the fans and these two elite fighters will have to wait a little longer for the biggest women’s UFC fight in history. But there is no doubt this Superfight will be worth the wait if and when it does happen!
