On Sunday, May 25th, WWE held the second and final event of its weekend festivities in Tampa, FL, “NXT Battleground.” The show’s main event saw Joe Hendry put the TNA World Championship on the line against NXT’s Trick Williams. This marked the first time in history that the TNA World Championship was defended on WWE television.

We also saw Stephanie Vaquer put her NXT Women’s Championship on the line against Jordynne Grace, Oba Femi put the NXT Championship on the line against Myles Borne, Sol Ruca put her Women’s North American Championship on the line against Kelani Jordan, six-man tag team action as Josh Briggs teams up with Hank & Tank to face off with The Culling, and more. So, what were the top three moments of the show?

3) Stephanie Vaquer Successfully Retains Her NXT Women’s Championship over Jordynne Grace

In one of the night’s biggest matches, we saw Stephanie Vaquer put her NXT Women’s Championship on the line against one of NXT’s newest signees, Jordynne Grace. Grace defeated Giulia on the May 6th edition of WWE NXT to earn the right to face Vaquer at Battleground. Vaquer enters the match having defeated Grace, Giulia, and Jaida Parker at Stand & Deliver last month. However, she had a whole different obstacle in her way on Sunday night as she faced off with Grace in a one-on-one setting for the first time.

The match itself delivered on just about every front. Grace threw everything she had at Vaquer to earn the right to call herself the NXT Women’s Champion. However, it was not to be, as Vaquer broke out every move she had in her arsenal to defeat the Juggernaut. Ultimately, Vaquer hit a spiral tap from the top rope to win the match and retain her NXT Women’s Championship. The spiral tap is a move that Vaquer has in her arsenal but doesn’t use often, but it is a thing of beauty.

Following her loss to Vaquer, it remains to be seen where Grace goes from here. There’s a long line of women in the NXT women’s division who are waiting to get their shot at the NXT Women’s Championship. If Grace wants another shot, she’d have to earn it. As for Vaquer, she remains atop the NXT women’s division and has no signs of giving it up anytime soon. Expect her to be a major part of the upcoming Worlds Collide show with AAA, NXT, and perhaps even TNA.

2) Myles Borne Shines Against Oba Femi

In one of the most unexpected matches of the night, we saw Oba Femi defend the NXT Championship against Myles Borne. Borne shocked the world when he won the May 6th edition of NXT’s battle royal match. Borne defeated the likes of Shawn Spears, Ethan Page, and others of the best that NXT had to offer in a terrific showing to earn this spot. While this came as a surprise, Borne shone in his match with Femi at Battleground.

Borne dug deep into his playbook to try and knock off one of the most dominant NXT Champions in history. This even saw him go high-risk a couple of times to continue to beat down the much bigger and stronger opponent. Borne was even able to kick out of one of Femi’s signature moves, Fall From Grace. Ultimately, though, Femi hit Borne with two more Fall From Graces to pin him and retain the NXT Championship after what was a war between the two men.

Femi maintains his spot at the top of the NXT mountain when it comes to the men’s division. But the bigger story coming out of this match was Borne. Despite his loss, Borne showed everyone he was more than just a member of the No Quarter Catch Crew, and he has all the makings to be a singles star in the WWE. The comparisons to a younger Randy Orton are there, and if history is any indication, Borne can have quite the singles run in WWE, both in NXT and on the main roster.

1) Trick Williams Is The New TNA World Champion

The main event of the show saw the TNA World Champion, Joe Hendry, put his TNA World Championship on the line against NXT’s Trick Williams. It can’t be overlooked how monumental this is for WWE and TNA. This was the first time in history that a TNA World Championship, or any championship from TNA, was defended on WWE television. Both Hendry and Williams had something to prove, with Hendry looking to hold on to his championship and Williams looking to defend NXT from the outsiders. Something was going to have to give.

This match comes a month after Hendry was Randy Orton’s mystery opponent at WrestleMania 41. Hendry has shown up at NXT, Williams has shown up in TNA, and the WWE/TNA partnership is truly booming with this rivalry. From the entrances, it felt like a historic match, which is a good thing because it was. Trick looked ready to go, and Hendry had the crowd screaming his song and cheering him on. The match itself was as fun as you would imagine it would be.

Williams hit a bookend on Hendry through the announce table, and followed it up with a trick shot in the ring, but Hendry had the wherewithal to kick out. Ultimately, Williams drives Hendry face-first into the TNA World Championship and hits a trick shot on Hendry to win the match and the TNA World Championship. A WWE superstar is the TNA World Champion, which truly shows that the partnership between WWE and TNA is entering a whole new gear.
